The book is about a boy whose mum is released from prison on probation but she has had no money or food since the boy’s dad left her. After a few days his mum made a mistake and got sent back to prison. After that, he thinks the only person or living thing he can trust are his pet rats called Venon and Vulture. He makes a plan to get back at his neighbour because he thinks his neighbour is to blame for his mum going back to prison but, after a tragic accident, he soon realises that his neighbour wasn’t to blame.

I would recommend the book for students in Years 4 – 6. It is generally a good book and it helps you learn to accept things that are beyond your control.
